October Birchbox

November snuck up on me y’all!

I’ve been putting off my October Birchbox post because I’ve been too busy to take any photos of the products.

This post has been looming in the back of my mind for several weeks. So today when I finally got my camera out to take the pictures, I realized I lost my charger…and the battery is dead.

So I will be using photos stolen from the BB website. I hope they don’t mind!

This month's box was special. Birchbox teamed up with goop to create a box of must-try essentials.

Here's what I got:

Lulu Organics dry shampoo -love this!

Embryolisse’s cult Lait-Crème Concentre
a.k.a shea butter that makes your skin feel like silk!

Lemon Bar! yum!

Naked Princess (strange name for a lip gloss)
Non-irritating lip plumper

Karuna Mask
(not the gooey kind...it is an actual "cloth mask")

If you don't have a Birchbox you are totally missing out. It is the perfect way to treat yourself every month (and they're only $10 bucks!) For more information click here!

Happy Halloween!

Christmas Shopping

Last weekend was spent with my Mom.

By the way, She is doing great! Her trip to Houston was such a success. She met some wonderful, ah-mazing, super smart, best of the best, oh so talented, cancer-ass-kicking doctors! Sorry, one adjective wasn’t enough.

She’s decided to receive her treatment in Houston at MD Anderson. A week from tomorrow (Wednesday, Nov. 7th) she will undergo a mastectomy. It’s going to be a long (long long long) recovery but we are confident that this is the best place for her. For more details on my Mom’s trip to Houston and information on her treatment plan, visit her blog: Busting Free.

In the meantime, I will be commuting to Ada from Edmond. (It’s about 1 ½ hours drive) I’m staying with my little sister while my Mom’s in Houston.

Anyway, back to last weekend!

Because my mom is going to be bedridden for the time being, we spent most of Sunday shopping for Christmas presents. We aren’t sure if she is going to be able to do much shopping over the next couple of months. Surprisingly, we were pretty successful.

When it comes to Christmas shopping, I believe in starting early... that way you don’t bust your bank (a lession learned from my dad).  As a child, I can remember shopping for school clothes at the Limited Too (remember that store?) and pointing out things that I wanted. My precious daddy would go back the next day and buy it for Christmas.

Although...I have found a kink in the “starting early”strategy. Sometimes, it’s hard for me to stop. I end up buying way too many gifts for my loved ones…. or I get so excited about my finds that I end up giving it to them early.  That may or may not have happened last week with an adorable fringe scarf I bought for my little sister.

How about you? Have you started your Christmas shopping yet?

p.s. aren't those vintage pictures cute? They remind me of Bing Crosby Christmas songs and all those classic claymation Christmas movies...

p.s.s. yes, I'm aware that tomorrow is Halloween! I'll try to hold off on the Christmas posts from now on!

Book Review: The Night Circus

It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these. I have several books I want to tell you about, however, this novel is one of my favorites.

Source

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern is such a beautiful story with perfect use of imagery. The author has an amazing imagination; she did an excellent job describing the colorful scenes that took place in her vintage circus. Her words touched all my senses. I could taste the hot chocolate, I could feel the heat from the fire, I could see the changing colors of Celia’s dress. Her writing took me back in time; it was so vivid.

However, this book is for patient readers. It took me a while to figure out what was going on; naturally, my confusion made it hard to commit to the book. In the early chapters, I found myself bored. But once the plot started to come together, once the circus began, it was a page turner.

It’s hard to describe the plot without giving too much away. Basically, it’s a tale of magic.

I paraphrased the amazon description:

The circus arrives without warning, it also leaves without warning. Behind the black and white stripped tents are breath-taking illusions, and it is only open at night.

Behind the scenes, two magicians (Marco and Celia) are dueling in a “mysterious” competition, one they know nothing about. Both of them are unaware of the fact that this is a game in which only one survives.

Despite the high stakes, Celia and Marco can’t resist their mutual attraction and eventually fall in love. Their romance sparks a domino effect of dangerous consequences, leaving the lives of everyone, from the performers to the patrons, hanging in the balance.

My casting choices:

Celia: Camilla Belle

Marco: Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Prospero- Geoffrey Rush

As I said earlier, this was a frustrating read. It took a while to figure everything out but I promise it is worth the wait!   Oh! and they are making a movie! I can't wait!

my weekend and update on my mom.

As I mentioned Friday, I spent the weekend with two of my favorite people: Autumn and Ava.

Ava’s daddy was out of town so we had ourselves a girls weekend.

I just love those lips.

Saturday, we went to a fall festival.

Ava and I took lots of pictures together.

She is quite the wiggle worm.

She is constantly changing her mind on whether or not she wants to be held or put back down…but then you put her down and she decides she wants to be held.

It’s all very exhausting.

And absolutely adorable.

Sadly Autumn and I never got a picture together.

We tried taking one but decided the angle made us look fat...we deleted it quickly.

Sunday, I drove to Edmond to stay the night with my little sister.

Our brother, Brandon, joined us for dinner.

I cooked a pot roast.

To my surprise, there weren't any leftovers!

It was a rare treat to spend an evening alone with my siblings. Our mom is out of town so we had the house to ourselves.

A month or so ago, I wrote this post about my Mom’s diagnosis with breast cancer…there aren’t many updates to report. Yesterday she traveled to Houston, where she is visiting doctors at M.D. Anderson.

She is still trying to figure out when/where/who should do the mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. We are praying that she finds clarity (and peace) this week in Huston. It’s going to be a long road but I know God has his protective hands on her.

For more information on my Mom, visit her blog at Busting Free!

While my mom is in Huston, I am keeping our family dog, Kosmo.

Kosmo lives with my Mom but I like to think of myself as “Kosmo’s momma.” I got him when I was fourteen. When I went off to college my mom refused to part with him.

I’m so excited to have his company this week.

I packed his favorite toys!

I apologize in advance for all the pictures I’ll be posting on instagram of my fur-baby, and will try my best to not go overboard!

Happy Monday!

High Five for Friday!

I type this post with heavy eyes, bad hair, and no mascara.

This week has been a crazy one.

Long gone are the days of late nights with 10 a.m. wake up calls for class.

Also, long gone are the days where sweat pants and sorority shirts pass as acceptable “work” attire.

I have a very real desire to implement "nap time" at work. How wonderful would it be to pull out a red and blue mat, pillow, and a fleece blanket every day at 1:00?

Hey, a girl can dream!

Today we are linking up with Lauren over at From My Grey Desk for High Five for Friday!

The Lucky One by Nicholas Sparks

1. Starbucks and an Audio book. Best idea I’ve had all week. I’m about half way through (I’ve been in the car A LOT this week) and so far I LOVE it. Review coming soon!

2. A new favorite: Muse by Lucca. It’s a little home décor boutique located in Penn Square Mall, OKC. I can’t decide whether or not to be happy because I found a charming place to shop, or cry because most of the stuff is out of my budget.

I went home with these precious silver plated antlers:

I can't wait to start adding color!

They are the first purchase for my bathroom re-do. I’m thinking black and white with a splash of color, maybe some chevron? Shopping for shower curtains as we speak.

3. Just hours after purchasing the antlers, I traveled to Madill, Okla. Hometown of my Ma and Pa. Where I attended an art show and got to pick out a painting to take home. Thank you Poppa!

I chose this adorable cow:

I’m envisioning him in a big gallery frame with a dramatic white mat. When I sent the picture to my mom she replied “were laughing.” I guess I’ve gone country!

4. This week’s episode of Modern Family was brilliant. I had to pause the show because I was laughing so hard! I just love Cam!

Image stolen from Facebook.
I hope her Momma doesn't mind!
5. I’m so excited to be spending the weekend with my precious niece and best friend. Her Daddy is out of town so we are having a girl’s weekend!

Happy Friday!

Clumsy Me

This week I…

-Dropped my Bare Essentials blush brush into the toilet. Don’t worry, I threw it away.

I don’t think my brush cleaner was up for the challenge of removing toilet water. yuck

-I drove to OKC to go shopping with a friend (an hours drive) and forgot my wallet. Of course, I didn’t realize that it was missing until I was at the counter to check out. My friend saved the day and purchased my items for me. However, I wanted to die. Or move to Alaska.

Besides never being able to show my face at the fabulous store in Penn Square Mall (Muse), I don’t think I’ll be able to go shopping with my friend again.

I cringe every time I think of myself frantically emptying out the contents of my purse onto the counter...the moment I realized my money was an hour away (at home)...and hearing my friend say:

“Don’t worry, I’ll buy it.”

Oh! That's not all!

-I dropped my iPhone down a flight of concrete stairs. Luckily, my iPhone survived. However, my adorable Kate Spade cover (the one I bought in New York) didn’t make it. It died at impact.

-The morning following the iPhone catastrophe (today) I couldn’t find my keys. I tore my apartment upside down looking for them. Eventually I gave up and grabbed the spare. As soon as I was out the door I realized what happened to the keys: They spent the entire night OUTSIDE in the doorknob.

*gasp*

Thank goodness no one stole my car or broke into my apartment!! I guess I was distracted from dropping my phone and ruining my Kate Spade case. I must have rushed inside trying to survey the damage.

It’s been a rough week y’all.

I’ll be glad when it’s over!

See ya tomorrow for High Five for Friday!

B.Y.O.P.

Last week I attended the cutest party! It was inspired by all things pumpkin!

We called it “B.Y.O.P.” (Bring your own pumpkin)

Everyone brought a pumpkin to carve or paint.

I decided to bring a white pumpkin. I love the uniqueness about them.

They seem so charming to me.

Also, everyone brought their favorite pumpkin dish.

I brought mini cupcakes with homemade cream cheese frosting!

One of my favorite dishes was pumpkin dip.

My friend Loren was kind enough to share her recipe:

1 can of pumpkin
1 container of cool whip
1 pkg vanilla instant pudding
1 tsp pumpkin pie spice

Y'all have to try it! It was sooo good!

The hostess, Jen, made a delicious taco soup for dinner.

We even had pumpkin beer y'all!

I loved the paper plates and napkins! (I think they came from Target).

After dinner we all went outside to decorate our pumpkins.

There may or may not have been a competition for best looking pumpkin...

...and I may or may not have won!

Sadly, all the pictures of me with my pumpkin turned out blurry...I didn't realize it until I got them on the computer.

Everyone did such a great job with their pumpkins.

I especially loved this one:

You cant go wrong with a classic jack-o-lantern!

For my prize winning pumpkin, I received this beautiful trophy:

Also, I got a Tyler candle (scented pumpkin of course) and the cutest pumpkin coasters!

It was such a fun evening!

What about you? Are you participating in any festive activities this fall?

High Five for Friday

Friday. My favorite day of the week.

This weekend I have zero plans...I kind of like it that way.

I'll probably sleep.

Maybe do some crafts.

I might even cook a roast.

Church time on Sunday.

If I'm feeling productive, I'll squeeze in a little cleaning...

or maybe I'll take a road trip to see the family?

Wherever I end up, it's sure to be a nice break from the daily grind.

Today we are linking up with Lauren over at From My Grey Desk for High Five for Friday!

1.

I've recently discovered Downton Abbey...

Of course, I'm totally sucked in.

I love the way they talk; they say things like "quarrel" and "contrary" and "gallant" and a bunch of other romantic words that make me swoon.
2.

Merry Christmas at Walmart!

I parked by the garden section and when I entered it was a winter wonderland, complete with Mariah Carey's Christmas soundtrack playing over the speaker.

Brought a smile to my face.

3.

Coffee dates with friends.

A local coffee shop is serving "skinny pumpkin spice lattes." I'm in heaven!

 4.

Image from Google...I forgot to link the source.

Vampire Diaries is back on!

Yay!

oh! and how awesome is that dress on her?!

5.

Decorated by *me*
It won a prize y'all!

BYOP (Bring Your Own Pumpkin Party).

My girlfriends and I celebrated fall with a pumpkin party:

Pumpkin food, pumpkin carving, pumpkin painting...it was so much fun!

Full post on the party coming soon!

Have a wonderful weekend!
