High Five for Friday

This week has been C-R-A-Z-Y! Instead of mentioning my top 5 favorite things, I thought I would fill you in on what I’ve been up to.

I know, I know… You were hoping to read a witty story about how I embarrassed myself or about the handsome fireman who put money in my bucket (See “Tuesday”) and responded “Yes, Ma’am” when I thanked him. I considered burning down Wal-Mart just so he would come back!

But unfortunately, I am all out of wit. I’m plum tired!

So here is what I’ve been up to these last 5 days:

I worked late. The Chickasaw Cultural Center had their Christmas Light kickoff! Sanata turned on the lights and we ate tons of cookies. I love my job!

My friends and I rang the bell for Salvation Army at Wal-Mart. It was soooo cold but we had a lot of fun! We sang Christmas carols and flirted with cute firemen. Also, I was surprised at how many people willing to give. It was very touching.

I’m helping a friend decorate her new home for the holidays. Wednesday we took a trip to Hobby Lobby…the nearest Hobby Lobby is an hour away. I can’t wait to see the final product! I will be sure to take some pictures to share with you!

attended my first auction! It was soooo much fun! I bought a beautiful pair of Kate Spade earrings. They are perfect for work, they go with everything.

I’m headed to OKC to finish up the last bit of my Christmas shopping. I am so excited to be DONE.

As you can see, it’s been crazy! But I wouldn’t have it any other way!
I'm linking up with Lauren over at From My Grey Desk for High Five for Friday.

Happy Friday!

Call me Martha! I survived my first Thanksgiving!

I had such a delicious Thanksgiving. Because my mom is still recovering, I took over the cooking. I never knew how much work went into planning the meal!

Surprisingly, everything was perfect!

My Menu:

-Breakfast Casserole (to munch on during the Macy’s Parade of course!)
-Sausage Balls
-Sausage Queso
-Homemade Salsa
-Broccoli Cheese Casserole
-Sweet Potato Casserole
-Green Bean Bundles
-Homemade Rolls
-Red &White wine
-Southern Sweet Tea
-My step dad smoked the Turkey, helped with the gravy and mashed the potatoes.
I can't believe I survived my first Thanksgiving (without burning anything)!

As usual, I took part in the Black Friday shopping frenzy. Although, it wasn’t the same without mom.
Pictured above, you can see some of the photos I took with my siblings while we were waiting for Target to open. It got pretty crazy.

Sunday, I went to the Chiefs vs. Bronco’s game! Go Broncos! We had a blast!

Last night after driving for 6 hours back to Ada, I curled up in my comfy bed with my favorite Anthro candle (ah-mazing) and read my current book: Matched - love this book y’all! Review and cast list coming soon!

I hope you had a wonderful holiday!

Granny Orr's Thanksgiving

When I was a little girl we would always go to my great-grandmother’s house for Thanksgiving. All of my grandpa’s siblings and their children, and their children, and their children, okay I’ll stop now, would squeeze into her old house to eat lunch together.  It was like a family reunion.

Granny Orr lived in Lebanon, Oklahoma (aka. the middle of nowhere). Her house had an open flame gas heater. I can remember it always being very hot in there.

One year, I was probably 10 years old, Granny’s house had the most horrendous odor. We searched all over her home for the smell; one of my cousins even crawled under the house looking for a dead animal! To this day I can remember that awful stench.

After a failed attempt of discovering the source of the foul smell, the men went up the road to the church to get tables and chairs so we could eat outside. It was actually kind of fun, we all gathered under the car port to eat.

Once we filled our plates and said grace, my cousin Brad discovered the smell. He took one bite of the chicken dressing and immediately spit it out.

See...Granny always liked to keep all the Thanksgiving dishes setting out in the back room, which happens to be the same room that the heaters were located.

Apparently, she let the chicken dressing set overnight in the back bedroom and it spoiled.

What I remember most about that Thanksgiving was the way my entire family laughed once the smell was discovered. I remember all of us, young and old, laughing hysterically as Brad dry heaved over his plate.

I remember being so delighted to see the all the adults lose themselves with laughter. It was something that rarely happened.

I think sometimes “we adults” take things too seriously; we get so caught up with the stress of our  daily lives that we forget to laugh.

This Thanksgiving, enjoy your time with your family, reminisce over Thanksgivings past, and please for heavens sake:  laugh a little!

From my family to yours,

Happy Thanksgiving!

This morning I sat at my desk trying to decide what to write about. Lately, I’ve had the worst writers block. Inspired by tomorrow’s holiday, I decided to write about a memorable Thanksgiving.

As I began to type the story of a Thanksgiving from my childhood, I had a few holes in my memory so I called you to fill in the gaps. We reminisced about several Thanksgivings, including the time I ate the ice out of the fish freezer and got food poisoning. We laughed as we remembered Granny Orr’s cooking, thank goodness for Mimi’s cheesy potatoes; I would have starved without them. It seems like our lives have changed so much since those days.

Later this morning, I was in the process of purchasing a Christmas gift. I needed to verify your address. I called you at work and you were as helpful as usual. That’s something that I can always count on: no matter how busy you are at work, no matter how long you’ve been asleep at night, you will always answer my call.

After we got off the phone for the second time today I realized that *gasp!* today is your Birthday! How embarrassed I felt when I realized I had spoken with you, not once but twice, without wishing you a happy Birthday.

Of course, I called you back and you laughed it off.

I just want you to know that you are the BEST! I love you so much and I thank God every day for giving me you as my father.

I hope you have a happy happy birthday! I can’t wait to see you this weekend!
I love you,

Exhaustion. Lately, it’s all I feel.

This month has flown by.

I’d apologize for not writing more (4 measly posts this month…I’m so neglectful) but I don’t feel sorry.

See I’ve had to prioritize. Most of you know all about what’s been going on with my mom. I’ve been pretty busy taking care of everything around the home front. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the time to blog.

Commuting 1.5 hours to work which happens to be very busy right now…keeping our family and friends updated on my mom’s surgery via her blog –check it out here…and being “mom” to my little sister was a lot to balance.

I hope you didn’t forget about me while I was away!

I guess I just wanted y’all to know that I’m still alive! My mom is cancer free! …and I promise I haven’t quit blogging.

Also, my DVR has been neglected as well (so don’t take it personal!)

I hope you all had a happy Monday!

Mine has been filled with thoughts of turkey, gravy, sweet potatoes, broccoli cheese casserole, homemade rolls, and pecan pie that I’m going to consume in 3 days! Yay!

Did I mention that I am responsible for cooking our family’s Thanksgiving meal this year? Say a prayer!

Busting Free

Hello Internet!

I hope you've had a good week! This week has been an emotional roller coaster for me and my family. As most of you know, my mom was diagnosed withbreast cancer about a month ago.

On Wednesday she underwent a mastectomy. In the mean time, I've been guest blogging for her over at Busting Free.

If you are interested in hearing about how the surgery went, click here. Oh! and for the exciting here!

I want to thank all of you who have been praying for my mom. I’ve been showered with words of encouragement from several readers whom I’ve never met before. I’m truly touched by the outpour of love and support you all have shown!

So thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Manly Man

I saw you crossing the street towards the post office.

You looked so handsome in your black shirt and boots.

You reminded me of Johnny Cash, dark and mysterious.

"I’ve finally found my Marlboro Man!"

I had the urge to roll down my window and whistle at you.

But then I remembered that I’m a lady and ladies don’t catcall.

As I waited for the light to turn green, I tried to think of how to get your attention...

...and then you spit out a loogie and all was ruined.

So, to all the Johnny Cash’s, Marlboro Men, J Crew guys, surfur dudes and Prince Charmings of the world…

Next time you have the urge to spit out a loogie in public, think about the pretty girl who might be admiring your manly physique from afar…

I doubt she thinks spitting is sexy.

But what do I know?

Have a wonderful election day!

Go vote!

Hey, Look at my crotch...

Last week I attended a women’s conference with two of my friends, Brooke and Susan. We discussed topics like customer service, politics, leadership, getting out of debt, blah blah blah. Anyway, between the sessions we browsed the exhibit booths.

After gathering an impressive collection of free pens, we stopped at the Scentsy table.

Like most women, we were immediately distracted by the wonderful aroma of the little cubes. After smelling ten different flavors of cinnamon, I noticed a white powdery substance across the ah-hem "crotch" section of my black slacks.

Staring down at myself, I leaned over to my friend Brooke and whispered “Hey, look at my crotch” hoping she would provide me with an answer is to how long I’ve been walking around with powder on my pants.

When I didn’t get a response, I nudged her with my elbow and said firmly, “Brooke. Look. At. My. Crotch.”

At this point I’m in recovery mode. I’ve discreetly placed my leather portfolio in front of the powdery mess, hoping that no one would catch me attempting to brush it off.

Hopelessly, I looked up at Brooke and to my horror, noticed a complete stranger standing next to me. Stammering over my words I said “you’re not Brooke…”

She looked at me with a terrified expression (one that mimicked mine) and said “No I’m not, and I promise I didn’t look at your crotch.”

Somebody kill me now.

I apologized profusely, stuttering “I I I pppromise, I’m not a pervert! I spilt something on my pants!”

Suddenly, I’m unaware of why it was necessary to show the mishap to Brooke in the first place. Why didn’t I just excuse myself to the restroom like a normal person?

It was about that time that Brooke and Susan (and everyone else at the Scentsy booth) realized what happened. They couldn’t contain their laughter, they laughed and they laughed, bent over with tears in their eyes.

So I did the only thing I could, I placed my leather portfolio over my lap and walked quickly to the restroom. I found an empty stall and hid. I contemplated staying there forever. If I wait long enough, maybe they will forget my existence.

After a couple of minutes, I decided that if Kim Kardashian could face the world again after being flour-bombed I can too! I grabbed a damp paper towel and cleaned myself up.

When I returned to the infamous Scentsy booth, Brooke and Susan were still bent over with laughter. I couldn’t help it, I joined in!

Hey, they can’t laugh at me if I’m laughing too! Right?
